Syllabus Training for

Brown Belt (3rd Kyu)

Minimum Grading Requirements

3 months training period, 20 lessons and 2 TSKUK official stamps (advisory)

Kihon (Basics)

  1. Sanbonzuki x 5 Forward Steps (triple punch)
  2. (Step back each new block) Age Uke, Gyaku Zuki / Uchi Uke, Gyaku Zuki / Soto Uke, Gyaku Zuki / Gedan Barai, Gyaku Zuki / Shuto Uke, Nukite (head block, reverse punch / inside block, reverse punch / outside block, reverse punch / groin block, reverse punch / knife-hand block, spear-hand strike)
  3. Repeat (1 & 2) above, other side
  4. Mae Geri x 5 Forward Steps / Turn (front kick)
  5. Mawashi Geri x 5 Forward Steps / Turn (roundhouse kick)
  6. Mae Geri – Mawashi Geri x 3 Forward Steps. Changing legs / Turn and repeat (front kick – roundhouse kick)
  7. Yoko Geri Kekomi x 5 Forward in Zenkutsu Dachi / Turn (side thrust kick) (front stance)
  8. Ushiro Geri x 5 Forward Steps / Yame (back kick) (stop/finish)
  9. Yoko Geri Keage x 3 in Kiba Dachi / Turn and repeat (side snap kick) (horse stance)

Kata (Forms)

Tekki Shodan

Kumite (Sparring)

All attacks and blocks must be performed on one side only (both attacks and blocks will be performed from the left side).

One-Attack Sparring

Attack: Jodan (head punch)
Defence: Age Uke (head block) / counter Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch)

Attack: Chudan (stomach punch)
Defence: Soto Uke (outside block) / counter Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch)

Attack: Mae Geri (front kick)
Defence: Gedan Barai (groin block) / counter Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch)

Attack: Yoko Geri (side thrust kick)
Defence: Soto Uke (outside block) / counter Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch)

Attack: Mawashi Geri (roundhouse kick)
Defence: Uchi Uke (inside block) / counter Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch)

Attack: Ushiro Geri (back kick)
Defence: Gedan Barai (groin block) / counter Gyaku Zuki (reverse punch)


Shotokan Assessment Criteria

Please note that the student must meet all the requirements within a section to be awarded that mark.

Distinction

  • Kihon (Basics) (90% or higher)

    The student completes the techniques independently.

    The student performs their techniques to a high standard. Their movements are consistently developed, powerful, fast and with good timing.

    The student demonstrates consistent and fully developed body dynamics when performing their techniques. The student can also demonstrate that they understand that body dynamics is used to generate power, balance, and stability.

    The student is focused and demonstrates intensity within their moves.

  • Kata (Form) (90% or higher)

    The student completes their kata independently.

    The student must demonstrate a good understanding of movements within the kata. Each movement must be consistently fully developed and performed to the correct target.

    The student must demonstrate five or six of the following criteria, one of which must be technique:

    • Technique: movements performed correctly to a high standard. They are clear, fully developed, and consistent.
    • Dynamics: movements are performed sharply with good balance. The transitions between moves are completed with correct muscle engagement.
    • Eye direction: the kata is performed with the student looking in the correct direction and engaging their eyes before each move.
    • Timing: the kata is performed with the correct timing and tempo for each move or group of moves.
    • Kime: the student matches their breathing to each technique to tense the body and generate maximum power.
    • Zanshin: the student is totally focused; each move has intent, and the kata is performed with intensity.
  • Kumite (Sparring) (90% or higher)

    The student completes their sparring independently.

    The student demonstrates five or six of the following criteria:

    • Accuracy: attacks and counterattacks must be consistently to the correct target.
    • Distance: any attacks and counterattacks must be consistently at an appropriate range to just touch the target.
    • Pressure: each movement must look real and have the intention to do harm but retain full control.
    • Control: each technique is completed had full speed and power without excessive contact or harm to the partner.
    • Timing: each technique is explosive, but the sparring is not rushed. The student and their partner are able to synchronise their blocking and striking techniques.
    • Technique: movements performed correctly to a high standard. They are clear, fully developed, and consistent.

Merit

  • Kihon (Basics) (80-89%)

    The student completes the required techniques independently.

    The student performs their techniques to a high standard. Their movements are consistently developed, powerful, fast and with good timing.

    The student demonstrates consistent and fully developed body dynamics when performing their techniques.

    The student is focused.

  • Kata (Form) (80-89%)

    The student completes their kata independently.

    The student must demonstrate a good understanding of movements within the kata. Each movement must be consistently fully developed and performed to the correct target.

    The student must demonstrate three or four of the following criteria:

    • Technique: movements performed correctly to a high standard. They are clear, fully developed, and consistent.
    • Dynamics: movements are performed sharply with good balance. The transitions between moves are completed with correct muscle engagement.
    • Eye direction: the kata is performed with the student looking in the correct direction and engaging their eyes before each move.

    The student demonstrates mostly good, developed form with some power, speed, and timing.

    The student demonstrates some good body dynamics when performing their techniques.

    The student is generally focused.

  • Kata (Form) (70-79%)

    The student completes their kata independently without a count or support, with the correct techniques in the correct order in the correct directions.

    The student must demonstrate a basic understanding of movements within the kata. Some movements are fully developed and performed to the correct target.

    The student may demonstrate one or two of the following criteria:

    • Technique: movements performed correctly to a high standard. They are clear, fully developed, and consistent.
    • Dynamics: movements are performed sharply with good balance. The transitions between moves are completed with correct muscle engagement.
    • Eye direction: the kata is performed with the student looking in the correct direction and engaging their eyes before each move.
    • Timing: the kata is performed with the correct timing and tempo for each move or group of moves.
    • Kime: the student matches their breathing to each technique to tense the body and generate maximum power.

    The student cannot complete the techniques they are asked to demonstrate with support after three attempts.

    The student cannot complete their kata with support after three attempts.

  • Kumite (Sparring) (69% or lower)

    The student cannot complete their sparring with support after three attempts.
